2021 NEIMME AGM and Presidential AddressCOAL FROM THE NORTH-EAST AND HOW IT WAS SHIPPED TO THE WORLD

The aim of this talk is to explain what happened after the coal was delivered from the mine via the waggonways to the riverside, and the difficulties in loading ships and ultimately delivering to the growing industries of the industrial revolution, Victorian England and the World. The problems that were overcome in Technology, and who controlled the movement of coal, how this, and the types of vessels, developed over the centuries from 1700 to the present time, showing what the fuel demands of the new Gas and Electricity Industries played in Powering Britain and its ultimate demise.

About the Speaker:
Steve Martin worked in the High Voltage Switchgear manufacturing industry in the North East, involved in the Testing of a wide range of Circuit Breakers from 11Kv up to 500Kv for a number of years, both in the oil filled ranges, and latterly in SF6 insulated types. Gained a degree in Systems Behaviour and Electronics in 1990, before making a complete change in career path by managing and controlling the shipments of High Voltage Electrical Substations within the UK, to Saudi Arabia, India, the Far East and some interesting remote locations. Worked for Reyrolle, Rolls-Royce, and Seimens, latterly also becoming a UK adviser on the shipment of Dangerous Goods by Sea and Air for a large International company.
