Lithium?

The Counting House on Cornhill and Virtually

You are invited to a lecture on 'Lithium?', delivered by Andrew Smith, the CEO of Imerys British Lithium. The lecture will take place on Thursday, November 9th, 2023 at 18:00 in the Ledger Room of The Counting House on Cornhill in London, England. This is a rare opportunity to learn about the latest developments and challenges in the lithium industry from an expert in the field. You will also have a chance to network with other professionals and enthusiasts in the sector. Due to the limited space, you need to register in advance to attend the lecture in person. Alternatively, you can register to join the lecture online and interact with the speaker virtually. To register for either option, please visit this link: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/750155012837?aff=oddtdtcreator. We hope to see you there! TALK Since 2017, British Lithium has carried out drilling and exploration on Imerys-owned land in Cornwall and developed a unique process and pilot plant to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate. It received financial support from Innovate UK, UK’s national innovation agency, and the Automotive Transformation Fund, a funding program to support the electrification of vehicles and their supply chains in the UK. Following drilling and resource definition, inferred mineral resources are estimated at 161 million tonnes at a grade of 0.54 % lithium oxide. These resources give sufficient confidence to target a life of mine exceeding 30 years at a production rate of 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent per year, potentially enough to equip 500,000 electrical vehicles per year, by the end of the decade, meeting roughly two-thirds of Britain’s estimated battery demand by 2030 when all UK car manufacturers convert to electric vehicles. IMERYS BRITISH LITHIUM In June 2023, British Lithium joined forces with global mineral specialists Imerys to become Imerys British Lithium. Imerys British Lithium plans to use its technology and existing hard rock quarry, alongside a beneficiation plant and lithium refinery to produce over 20,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate every year, for at least 20 years. This is enough to supply over half a million electric car batteries every year. The project will prioritise environmental protection, benefit to the local community and wider socio-economic benefit to Cornwall. It will be delivered in consultation with all local and national stakeholders – while aligning with the IRMA benchmark – the international reference certification for responsible mining. ANDREW SMITH BIO Andrew is an engineer who has worked in the mining industry for 14 years and has led four successful feasibility studies. He was awarded first class honours for his thesis on energy consumed in mining and proposed novel autonomous electric mining equipment, elements of which have recently been adapted by major equipment manufacturers. Most recently, Andrew was project manager for the Cinovec Lithium Project (Czech) process development and in 2017 completed a Prefeasibility Study for the production of lithium, tin and potash. Andrew specialises in the specification, supervision and interpretation of metallurgical test work, development of extractive metallurgy and process design and was instrumental in developing the unique low-cost lithium flow sheet for Cinovec.

Mining Sundowner socials

MinSouth's early evening socials started in the 1970s and continue to be held regularly as a Mining Sundowner on the last Thursday of each month (except December) at a venue in the West End. For a number of years Emma Priestley organised the event; she passed the baton on to Liv Carroll in 2007. Liv has been a MinSouth committee member since 2004, was President for 2008-2009 session and is also a long standing committee member of the IOM3 Applied Earth Science Division.
