If you have ever visited Cornwall, you may have noticed the white hills that dot the landscape. These are the remnants of the kaolin or china clay industry, which has been active in the region for more than 250 years. Kaolin is a valuable material that has many uses and applications. Many of the remaining pits are nearing depletion, and the industry faces new challenges. If you are interested in learning more about the kaolin industry in Cornwall, you might want to join us for an upcoming talk by Bill Cooper, a resource geologist who works for Imerys UK, the only kaolin producer in the region. Bill will give us an overview of the history of kaolin mining in Cornwall, from its origins to its current status. He will also share some of the challenges that Imerys UK faces in operating and maintaining its mines, as well as some of the plans and prospects for the future of the industry after mining stops. The talk will be informative and engaging, and we hope you will find it valuable and enjoyable. Bill Cooper MSc ACSM MIMMM is a geologist who has worked in the mining industry for 16 years, in a variety of roles. These include underground and open pit mining geology in the Eastern Goldfields of Australia, mineral exploration in Australia and Western USA, and exploration and resource estimation consulting in the UK.
