Can information drive material properties?
Add to calCan information drive material properties?
What if material properties could be driven by the information they store, just as biological mutations modify natural materials? Could such low marginal costs of adaptation help convert our linear economy to a circular one, in which all matter is recycled by tweaking its information? How useful would such materials be?
Taking inspiration from biological systems, Dr Chris Forman researches automated materials discovery and the brand new field of in-materio computation. He offers an unblinkered yet realistic and positive vision of a future in which biology and manufacturing combine with information technology, to help solve our central material problems of waste and pollution.
Dr Forman is a researcher at Northwestern University and is co-author of a brand new title from MITPress—Brave Green World.
