AGM and “In-Service Investigation in Industry”

Talk by Jane Woolrich – Rolls-Royce.
Synopsis: The use of gas turbines in the aero industry is underpinned by a rigorous safety culture. As part of that emphasis on safety, parts returned from service are examined to ensure they have behaved as predicted, and any anomalies are subjected to a rigorous assessment to ensure continuing airworthiness. This talk will look at some of the tools and techniques used in the course of these investigations, from the mundane to the somewhat more esoteric.
Jane joined Rolls-Royce in Bristol as a graduate trainee and following completion of a two year training scheme she became a full time Materials Testing Engineer. Further training resulted in her spending time as an Engineering Designer, and then as a Contracts Manager, before returning to her first love of Materials as an Investigation Engineer. This has occupied her time since 1994, both in Bristol and more recently in Derby, supporting the Large Civil Aeroengine fleet. She achieved CEng in 2001 and became a Fellow of the IOM3 in 2018. In the background she has also completed a Masters degree in Gas Turbine Materials and is just (painfully!) writing up her PhD thesis on Single Crystal Nickel-based Superalloys.
