Magnetic NDT for Microstructures in Steels

Add to cal

Materials Department, Loughborough University and Virtual (MS Teams)

Our first technical meeting of the 2022/2023 season. A talk by Dr Lei (Frank) Zhou, WMG, Advanced Steel Research Centre (ASRC), University of Warwick. Synopsis Globally steel is the most used material by value and the second most used by weight (after concrete) due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties. The superb properties of steels are controlled by microstructural parameters developed by their chemical composition and thermo-mechanical processing but largely checked post-processing and destructively. The application of non-destructive testing (NDT) for steel microstructures can significantly benefit steel processing and their applications by optimisation of processing parameters and lowering the energy usage, achieving desired microstructures with less alloying, allowing greater recovery of downgraded products, and increasing the range of applications met by a grade to improve recyclability. The talk will discuss several Magnetic NDT sensors that are used online for in-situ monitoring of phase transformations and offline measurements for precipitation in power generation steel, decarbonisation in rails and potential in residual stress measurement. EMMS Support for Conference Attendance

EMMS were pleased to be able to support Dominic Kelsey from The University of Nottingham to attend the LANE 2024 conference organised by the Institute of Photonic Technologies and held in Furth, Germany. Dominic said on his return from the conference "Attending LANE 2024 was an invaluable experience that greatly contributed to both my academic and professional development. The conference provided a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge research and industrial advancements in laser applications, especially in the fields of laser cutting and drilling. Presenting my first PhD paper on laser cutting of CFRP enhanced my public speaking skills and helped me gain confidence in structuring presentations for a scientific audience.
