A talk by Dr Christopher Micallef - WMG, International Automotive Research Centre, University of Warwick
The Coventry Very Light Railway (VLR) project is a unique innovation collaboration between government, academia and industry aiming at delivering a novel mass transit solution for small to medium cities.
Light rail systems create low emission transport solutions, drive urban regeneration and are generally well received by the general public. However, the CAPEX costs associated with infrastructure installation make light rail an unattainable solution for many cities. Five years ago, Coventry City Council set the challenge of developing an affordable solution which would allow it to develop a city-wide light rail network. This has culminated recently with the testing of a full-scale vehicle demonstrator and the unveiling of a novel shallow trackform.
The presentation will focus of the development process of the patent pending rail trackform system enabled through the utilisation of advanced ultra performance cementitious composite materials and outline the upcoming prove-out tests and pilot projects that will be necessary to prove that the system is safe and reliable to be installed in Coventry and beyond.
