In October 2024, the UK Government launched a consultation on its new industrial strategy, Invest 2035. This is focused on long-term growth and indentifies eight high-growth sectors, including advanced manufacturing, clean energy and life science. All of them depend on materials, and the people who work with them. We expect the actual strategy to be published before the summer break.
This session explores what the strategy means for our sectors. How can we make sure maerials are recognised and supported? What needs to change, and where should we focus?

Timber 2025
9.30am – 10.30am GMT, 11 November 2025 ‐ 1 hour
Collaborate - Satellite Conference (Location: Millennium Point, Room TBC)
An in-depth conference programme running in parallel to M3P3. Delegates have the opportunity to join this event as part of their M3P3 registration.
This is a conference for the UK timber industry, wood technologists, wood scientists and related trades. It will showcase many new and interesting projects, research and developments in timber, wood products, and the science behind them.
The primary aims of the event are to showcase the latest developments in timber research in the UK, to allow knowledge transfer, and to prompt discussion of new products, and processes and their potential within the UK. It is an excellent chance to network, sharing knowledge between academia and businesses, and between specialists across the many disciplines within timber engineering, wood technology and wood science. An excellent opportunity to connect, strengthen our industry and work towards a resilient, sustainable future.
The conference will span all topics related to timber – from the largest structures to the smallest models of molecular structure or cell wall ultrastructure. The organisers seek to balance the fundamental lab- and forest-based experiments through to the industrial application and development of new products. Topics will range from preservation to panel products; modified wood to engineered lumber.

Pathways to Progress - IOM3 Training Academy (Location: TBC)
It is said that 80% of the environmental impact of a product is determined at the design stage. Much of that impact is in materials selection and processing. Generic methodologies for considering sustainability at an early stage in the product life cycle have been developed, and are beginning to be adapted and adopted into real engineering scenarios.
This is a taster session for our IOM3 Training Academy course. The full course introduces the main principles for designing for sustainability and circularity. The course looks at methodologies for introducing those principles into design, with four interactive workshops.

We can't keep taking, using and throwing away. The shift to a circular economy means rethinking how we use resources, keep them in use and design out waste.
The UK's upcoming Circular Economy Strategy (due this autumn) could change the way we do business for good. This session looks at what's on the horizon and how are sectors can lead the way.

Why is leadership so important in the 21st century?
All organisations require well trained leaders and managers to enable it move forward. In today’s competitive global market, organisations, large, small and everything in between, must maximise every opportunity to grow. To do this, exceptional leadership is essential. Leaders must engage talent, guide teams through change, and make timely decisions to enable the company to stay ahead. Organisational culture happens whether we are actively engaged with it or not. In a world of disruption and accelerating social change, any organisation which neglects to engage and embrace change risks putting itself at a massive disadvantage.
This is a taster session for our IOM3 Training Academy certified course covering all aspects of senior management skills, including managing and leading teams, developing a high performance culture, managing projects and the all important finance skills.

The UK strategy for energy security and net-zero carbon emissions envisages nuclear power as a source of electricity for decades to come. Alongside existing technologies, new options are being developed including small modular reactors and advanced high temperature fission nuclear reactors and fusion power plants. The UK government is strongly supporting the development of these systems with funding for R&D activities in industry and academia. The requirement to ensure safety and integrity of components designed to operate in excess of 60 years in some of the most challenging service conditions on the planet whilst controlling cost is driving a need for significant innovation in materials and their manufacture.
The need to ensure safety and integrity of components designed to operate in excess of 60 years in some of the most challenging service conditions on the planet whilst controlling cost is leading to significant materials and fabrication challenges. This seminar will bring together parties across industry and academia to highlight the current challenges faced by the industry and discuss possible solutions that may be available. This seminar will provide a forum for professionals to share experience in the developments being undertaken across the various reactor concepts, addressing the challenges described.

Materials are everywhere, supporting everything from clean energy and transport to defence and healthcare. But we need a clear vision to stay ahead. The new Henry Royce Institute led National Materials Innovation Strategy aims to put materials at the centre of UK innovation, while the expected Critical Minerals Strategy from the new government looks to secure the supplies we rely on.
This session brings together experts to look at where we are, what's coming next and what it means for our community.
