The Green Steel Revolution - pathways to a low carbon world

The Newport & Cardiff Materials Society (NCMS) is pleased to announce their first lecture of 2024 which will be delivered by Dr Chris Melvin from Tata Steel on 'The Green Steel Revolution - pathways to a low carbon world.'

The Steel Industry is currently going through its biggest upheaval in over half a century. Decarbonisation and Sustainability drives the business vision and strategy across the world, supported by radical changes in legislation to meet Net Zero commitments, with a number of new and existing technologies accelerating towards industrialisation. In this lecture, Chris will present some of the officially announced strategies of different companies, what these technologies of tomorrow may be and how realistic a proposition some of them are in the short, medium, and long term with a focus on Raw Materials and Energy security.

Chris has over 10 years’ experience in the Steel Industry working mainly within transformation and process/cost optimisation roles within technical and manufacturing functions. Chris has represented the industry and IOM3 within the CAETS Energy Committee and has an excellent understanding of the decarbonisation challenge and potential pathways and their associated risks.

Chris is part of the IOM3 Assessors group, mentors a range of professionals working towards accreditation for Chartered Scientist and Engineers and was the South Wales Materials Association President from 2018-2021.

The lecture will be delivered as a hybrid event, with the lecture being presented in Trevithick Room T2.09, Queen's Buildings, Cardiff University, 5 The Parade, Cardiff, CF24 3AA. Please register using the link above to view online.
