Vale has announced 100% of electricity used in its operations in Brazil comes from renewable sources, ahead of the 2025 schedule.

The information is highlighted in the 2023 edition of the Integrated Report, which includes other environmental, social and diversity advances made by the company.

Vale claims to have zeroed its indirect CO2 emissions in Brazil, which correspond to scope 2, with this move.

The company still aims to achieve 100% renewable energy consumption in its global operations by 2030. The current figure stands at 88.5%, says the firm.

They attribute this progress to the start-up of the Sol do Cerrado solar complex in November 2022.

Located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the solar complex represents an investment of US$590mln by Vale. It has an installed capacity of 766MW-peak.

In July 2023, the complex reportedly reached its maximum capacity.

Vale is supplied by a renewable energy portfolio of 2.6GW of installed capacity.

Director of Energy and Decarbonisation at Vale, Ludmila Nascimento, says, ‘We are announcing an important milestone in Vale's decarbonisation strategy, which aims to reduce its scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions (direct and indirect) by 33% by 2030 and to become net-zero by 2050’.
