Shaft discovery delays Stonehenge tunnel decision

The UK Secretary of State for Transport has decided to defer his decision about a tunnel intended to improve the A303 past Stonehenge following a recent archaeological find. The decision is now due in November.

The discovery by a University of Bradford led-team last month, revealed a Neolithic structure which includes a number of shafts aligned to form a circle more than 2km in diameter – each shaft is more than 5m deep and up to 20m across.

The research is available as an open access article in Internet Archaeology.
