Report calls for materials transition

Consultancy Wood Mackenzie has issued a report indicating that the global rate of materials extraction is ‘unsustainable’ and there is a need to untether economic growth from consumption.

Consultancy Wood Mackenzie has issued a report indicating that the global rate of materials extraction is ‘unsustainable’ and there is a need to untether economic growth from consumption.

Linking the move to the ongoing  ‘energy transition’, the report backs a ‘materials transition’. Using packaging and polymer examples (polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate) the report suggests paths to a more sustainable future. There is a brief look at construction.

Ultimately the report sees tighter regulation and an important role for chemical recycling.
