IOM3 responds to Queen’s Speech

The Monarch has set out the Government’s plan to 'deliver a national recovery from the pandemic that makes the UK stronger, healthier and more prosperous than before'

Among the speech was a list of planned new bills aimed to ‘level up opportunities’ across the UK.

IOM3 CEO Colin Church FIMMM CEnv, says, ‘The Queen’s speech sets the legislative agenda for the coming year, so it is good to see it touch on some areas of concern for IOM3 members such as how to address the growing skills gap and how to improve the regulation of building safety in the light of recent tragedies. The re-emphasis in the Queen’s Speech on the UK’s world-leading ambition on addressing climate change in the run-up to COP26 is also welcome.’

Matters relevant to sectors where IOM3 members work include the following:

  • Legislation will set binding environmental targets (Environment Bill)
  • A new system for regulating the safety of high-rise buildings, and inspecting construction sites (Building Safety Bill)
  • ‘flexible loan’ system to promote wider participation in further education in England (Skills and Post-16 Education Bill)
