First international standard to advance action on UN Sustainable Development Goals
The standard provide a practical framework for embedding commitments into governance, strategy and operations.
The requirements-based management system is titled ISO/UNDP 53001 from The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the UN Development Programme. It will enable organisations to measure progress and demonstrate accountability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It aims to identify priorities, establish objectives, integrate them into existing processes, and measure performance over time for businesses, governments, educational institutions and organisations.
ISO says the standard will remain relevant after 2030 – the deadline for when UN SDGs should be met.
ISO/UNDP 53001 ‘provides a foundation for a global quality architecture that can help businesses translate current and future sustainable development priorities into credible management practice, while enabling governments and development institutions to engage the private sector around a common international framework’.
