EU fifth round of sanctions against Russia – minerals and materials in focus

Following atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that the EU take Russian sanctions a step further.

This proposed fifth package includes imposing an import ban on coal from Russia, worth EUR4 bln per year.

A ban on Russian vessels and Russian-operated vessels from accessing EU ports. Certain exemptions will cover essentials, such as agricultural and food products, humanitarian aid as well as energy.

Targeted export bans, worth EUR10 bln, in areas in which Russia is vulnerable. This includes, for example, quantum computers and advanced semiconductors, sensitive machinery and transportation equipment.

Specific new import bans, worth EUR 5.5 bln on products including wood and cement.
