Ammonia to be assessed as hydrogen fuel source for cement kilns
A 12-month project to assess ammonia as a source of hydrogen fuel in cement kilns has received funding from Innovate UK.
Heidelberg Materials' cement works in Ribblesdale, Lancashire, is taking part in the study alongside engineering consultants Stopford and Cranfield University.
The research will build on a previous project at Ribblesdale that saw the first demonstration of hydrogen as part of a net-zero fuel mix to power a cement kiln.
The new project will explore the potential of using ammonia as a low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen carrier. It will evaluate the most efficient method of 'cracking' ammonia onsite to release hydrogen.
