A cross-party commission to get competitive decarbonisation

A new cross-party and cross-industry commission wants to explore how the UK can reach net zero without undermining it's industrial competitiveness.

The Commission for Carbon Competitiveness has been launched by John Penrose who will Chair the group and is the Conservative MP for Weston-super-Mare, Jo Gideon - the Conservative MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, Stephen Kinnock - the Labour MP for Aberavon and Arjan Geveke - the Director of the Energy Intensive Users Group.

They say that over the next few months they will gather evidence from a cross-section of industry and subject matter experts and engage with MPs who share the same interest, and will report their recommendations in the Spring.

They aim to find solutions to carbon leakage, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms, so that the UK can transform the energy-intensive industries and industrial communities to be the centre of green growth.

They say that the UK's intensive industries have a key role to play in the net zero transition but that they must not lose out to international rivals who do not have the same environmental taxes or regulations.
