2025 Impact Factor results
IOM3 Journals celebrate the latest publishing metrics and rankings.
Last month, Clarivate Analytics released the 2025 Journal Citation Reports, which provide journal level metrics used to assess the citation performance and influence of scholarly publications. The most widely used metric is the Journal Impact Factor, which reflects the average number of citations received by a journal.
The 2025 Impact Factors are calculated using citations received in 2024 to articles published in 2022–2023.
In 2025, the 15 scientific journals of IOM3 published by SAGE were included in the Journal Citation Reports, with results reported across Impact Factor and other citation-based indicators of journal performance and influence.
Some key highlights from across the portfolio include:
Impact Factors
The majority of IOM3 journals recorded an increase in Impact Factor in the 2025 Journal Citation Reports.
The largest percentage increase was recorded by Applied Earth Science, which rose by 57%, from 1.4 in 2024 to 2.2 in 2025. Mining Technology (MNT) also showed a significant increase of 55%, rising from 2.2 to 3.4 over the same period.
International Materials Reviews (IMR) remained the highest-ranked journal in the portfolio, with an Impact Factor of 17.0, representing a 10% increase from 15.5 in 2024. The journal also maintained its Q1 ranking, placing 31st out of 472 journals in the Materials Science, Multidisciplinary category.
Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy improved its category ranking from Q4 in 2024 to Q1 in 2025, ranking 8th out of 35 journals in the Mining & Mineral Processing category.
CiteScores
The 2025 CiteScore results also reflected strong performance across the IOM3 journal portfolio. CiteScore measures the average number of citations received per document published over a four-year period, providing an annual indicator of a journal's citation impact.
IMR achieved the highest CiteScore in the portfolio at 47.3, followed by Science and Technology of Welding and Joining (STWJ) with 7.2. Materials Science and Technology recorded the largest increase, rising 34% from 3.2 in 2024 to 4.3 in 2025, while Powder Metallurgy increased by 20% to 4.8.
Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, STWJ, and IMR all retained their Q1 rankings for this metric. Tribology - Materials, Surfaces & Interfaces and MNT improved from Q3 to Q2 in their respective subject categories.
Immediacy Indexes
The 2025 Immediacy Index results included several notable year-on-year improvements, with a handful of journals recording substantial percentage increases. The Immediacy Index measures how quickly articles are cited in the same year they are published.
Plastics, Rubber and Composites recorded the largest percentage increase, rising 1000%, from 0.1 in 2024 to 1.1 in 2025, placing it as the second-highest Immediacy Index in the portfolio. IMR achieved the highest Immediacy Index at 3.2, while Advances in Applied Ceramics recorded the second-largest percentage increase, increasing by 300%, from 0.1 in 2024 to 0.4 in the most recent results.
The 2025 journal metrics demonstrate continued strong citation performance across the IOM3 portfolio. Increases in Impact Factors, CiteScores and Immediacy Indexes, together with improvements in subject rankings for several journals, reflect the continued visibility, influence and knowledge sharing of research published across the portfolio.
