The IOM3 Ground Engineering Subgroup is for the broad ground engineering community including site and laboratory technicians, geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, geo-environmental engineers and many other ground engineering professionals.

Ground engineering is defined as ‘an understanding of geological structures, materials and processes, combined with the systematic application of investigative, scientific and engineering techniques to produce practical solutions to ground related issues for the benefit of society’. 

Ground engineering encompasses a wide range of activities from site investigation, temporary works and permanent works to support construction. Some examples of these are provided below:

1. Site Investigation

  • Obtaining the correct ground information (geological, geotechnical, geo-environmental and hydrogeological)
  • Application of the collected information for ground beneath sites that are to be developed

The Ground Engineering Subgroup aims

 

  • to support professionalism within the ground engineering community by promoting qualifications;
  • to promote improved communications between GE and industry by the production of a newsletter and a website space for ground engineering community within IOM3;
  • to organise joint lectures, articles, conferences that address key issues and the future sustainability of ground engineering;
  • to reinforce existing GE links with emerging ground engineers from universities, colleges and schools;
  • to keep the growing number of ground engineers applying to institute engaged by sharing knowledge between institute members to provide technical information and contacts for the ground engineering community;
  • to provide a focus with linking and sharing knowledge across the IOM3 where ground engineering can share and gain knowledge from technical communities and subgroups
