19:00 Lecture begins: Not Just Steel
Tata Steel in the UK produces approximately 3.5 million tonnes of liquid steel every year from its steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales. From this, in excess of 60,000 grades and dimensions of steel products can be produced for use in industries as diverse as construction, packaging, automotive, engineering, energy and consumer products. With different products that require high strength (construction vehicles), flexibility (tin cans), longevity (building facades or flooring) and durability (scratch resistant automotive panels), there is plenty of research that goes into the steel making and subsequent additional functionality. This talk will outline some of this research, in particular focussing on how coatings of various types add value to steel products, and highlighting the upcoming requirements for sustainability and decarbonisation within the coatings area for a modern steel making company.
Chris is the coatings knowledge group leader within Research and Development at Tata Steel, based in Swansea University. With seven years in the company, Chris heads a diverse team researching both organic (paints, lacquers) and inorganic (tinplate, galvanised coatings) coatings for various steel products. Chris has a background in Chemistry and the utilisation of polymer systems for a variety of applications.
For those attending in person, this will be in the IMC Building within Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick. Car parking is available on site in pay and display visitor car parks.
Although we hope as many as possible will attend in person, the lecture will also be available on-line (teams details to follow by email). Whether attending in person or on-line please register via the link below:
