AGM and Technical Lecture: Not Just Steel

Add to cal

Lecture theatre IMC004, WMG Warwick, 6 Lord Bhattacharyya Way, Coventry CV4 7AL

CWMS is pleased to announce our AGM and our next lecture, from Chris Mills – Coatings Designs and Applications Knowledge Group Leader, Research and Development, Tata Steel. The meeting will be a hybrid event and the format of the evening will be:
18:00 Welcome from the committee, and AGM. Please see the Documents tab for the agenda and a proposal from the Committee for updating the CWMS constitution. Please note you will be asked to vote on the variants to regulation 13 during the meeting.
18:30 Refreshments for those attending in person, and a Q&A with IOM3 CEO Colin Church for all
19:00 Lecture begins: Not Just Steel
Tata Steel in the UK produces approximately 3.5 million tonnes of liquid steel every year from its steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales. From this, in excess of 60,000 grades and dimensions of steel products can be produced for use in industries as diverse as construction, packaging, automotive, engineering, energy and consumer products. With different products that require high strength (construction vehicles), flexibility (tin cans), longevity (building facades or flooring) and durability (scratch resistant automotive panels), there is plenty of research that goes into the steel making and subsequent additional functionality. This talk will outline some of this research, in particular focussing on how coatings of various types add value to steel products, and highlighting the upcoming requirements for sustainability and decarbonisation within the coatings area for a modern steel making company.
Chris is the coatings knowledge group leader within Research and Development at Tata Steel, based in Swansea University. With seven years in the company, Chris heads a diverse team researching both organic (paints, lacquers) and inorganic (tinplate, galvanised coatings) coatings for various steel products. Chris has a background in Chemistry and the utilisation of polymer systems for a variety of applications.
For those attending in person, this will be in the IMC Building within Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick. Car parking is available on site in pay and display visitor car parks.
Although we hope as many as possible will attend in person, the lecture will also be available on-line (teams details to follow by email). Whether attending in person or on-line please register via the link below:
www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cwms-june-lecture-and-agm-chris-mills-tata-steel-tickets-345699996997
Please select either in person or virtual tickets so we can keep track of numbers. As a further incentive for in-person attendance, CWMS will award the first ten post-graduate or under-graduate students to register and then attend the lecture in person free membership of IOM3 for a year (normal cost £20)!
