Materials for conservation & a healthy environment

Coventry & Warwickshire Materials Society (CWMS) is pleased to announce their first meeting of 2024 which will be delilvered by Dr Richard Ball on 16 January.

This lecture touches on a topic which is of concern for all of us - how the buildings we live and work in impact our health - and how materials science is improving the maintenance of historic structures.

In recent years, societies have become increasingly aware of the importance of air quality on health and wellbeing. The interactions between buildings, their human occupants and air pollutants are also interrelated in many ways. This talk will firstly consider outdoor air pollutants revealing how these affect historic building materials and how nanomaterials can be used to repair and mitigate against future damage. Recent work on the study of indoor air pollutants will then be introduced including their interaction with surfaces and how air quality is influenced through the choice of materials.

Dr Richard Ball BEng, PhD, FHEA, CSci, CEng, FIMMM is a Reader in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. He has a background in materials science and his research interests are focused on construction materials and their interaction with the environment. He is secretary of the West of England Metals and Materials Association.

The agenda for the evening will be:
18:00 Networking and refreshments for those attending in person
18:30 Lecture begins.

Although we hope as many as possible will attend in person, the lecture will also be available on-line. Details of the lecture theatre and a Zoom link will be sent to those who have registered by email a few days before the event. Please register by clicking on the Book Now button at the top of the page.

There should be plenty of on-site parking spaces available in the early evening but the university has a cashless payment system. Details are given here: warwick.ac.uk/services/carparks/general_parking/  You can pay by downloading an app, or via phone call or text (after creating an account), or perhaps most simply if you go to the Arts Centre you can pay by debit or credit card. You can also pay up to 24 hours later via a web-site. If you arrive after 17:00 it only costs £2.00.
