We're delighted to be working with award-winning science communicator and author Dr Anna Ploszajski to offer this course

Communicating complex information clearly is an essential professional skill. Whether you are preparing a technical report, grant proposal or consultancy report, your writing needs to help readers understand your work, recognise its significance and act on your findings.

This practical course explores how storytelling techniques can strengthen technical and professional writing. You will learn how to identify your key messages, structure your document and guide your reader through complex information while maintaining technical accuracy.

Through exercises and structured feedback, you will apply these techniques to your own work. By the end of the day, you will have developed a clear report plan, drafted a section and created a writing schedule to help you complete your document.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for engineers, scientists, researchers, consultants and other professionals who write technical or professional documents.

It will be particularly useful for those preparing technical reports, consultancy reports, grant proposals, feasibility studies, failure analyses, options appraisals or recommendations for decision-makers.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Define your document’s purpose, audience and key messages.

  • Develop a structure that guides readers through your work.

  • Write clear, connected paragraphs with appropriate language, tone and signposting.

  • Present data and visual information to support your message.

  • Apply a structured editing process to improve clarity, accessibility and technical quality.

  • Plan your writing time and use feedback to strengthen your document.
