Welcoming the new Trustee of IOM3

Dr Andrew Spowage CEng CSci FIMMM has been appointed as a Trustee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3).

We're pleased to announce Andrew Spowage as a Trustee, bringing with him a wealth of experience spanning academia, industry and professional practice.

Since joining Queen Mary University of London in 2018, Andrew has held several diverse academic, leadership and professional-practice roles. Notably, he has supported the Queen Mary Engineering School in Xi’an, China, one of the UK’s largest transnational materials engineering programmes. Before his current role, Andrew served as Engineering Manager APAC for Wood plc, where he was responsible for materials-related service lines across the Asia-Pacific region. Before that, he was Head of the School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.

Andrew’s technical expertise focuses on the performance of materials in service, including materials selection, corrosion, failure investigation, testing and asset integrity. His career reflects a strong combination of academic leadership, professional education, consultancy and engineering practice.

A longstanding member of IOM3 since 1992, Andrew is a Fellow of the Institute, as well as a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Scientist. He has contributed widely to IOM3 activities, including programme accreditation and supporting the Young Persons’ Lecture Competition. He is currently a member of the Accreditation & Professional Formation Committee, the Professional Standards and Development Board, the Awards Committee and the Audit Working Group, and also serves as the IOM3 representative on the Engineering Council’s Quality Assurance Committee.

In his role as Trustee, Andrew is committed to strengthening engagement with the IOM3 global membership. He aims to enhance the visibility and connectivity of the Institute’s international activities, ensuring they deliver meaningful value to members worldwide.

Speaking about his appointment, Andrew said: 'I am honoured to take on this role and to support the Institute's members and communities. I aim to help strengthen links with international members and to ensure that international activity is visible, connected and valuable to members, wherever they are based.'
