Rio Tinto invests in bauxite production centre
The company is investing USD$1.9bln into the Kangwinan project on Western Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia.
The investment looks to add 20Mt of annual production capacity to the area of Weipa.
The area is of significant importance to Rio Tinto as the company winds down production at the Andoom mine near the town of Weipa and the Gove mine in the Northern Territory.
Kangwinan, where early works began in 2025, will establish a new bauxite production centre 15km south-east of Rio Tinto’s Amrun mine, which is located 40km south of Weipa.
A 15km conveyor will transport ore from Kangwinan to expanded stockyard facilities and the existing Amrun wharf.
With the company investing in other projects in Weipa, the combined Amrun, Kangwinan and Aurukun operations are expected to support operations well beyond the middle of this century.
This current brownfield investment targets first bauxite output in 2029 and full production in 2032.
