Swiss Federal Council sanctions gold from Sudan
The Council joins the EU in banning the purchase, import and transit of gold originating from Sudan.
The ban also applies to the provision of related services and granting of financial assistance in connection with the gold.
Sale and supply to Sudan of certain goods and chemicals used in gold mining and gold extraction is prohibited as well, and the measures are in force from 10 September 2026.
This follows the EU’s implementation of sanctions from 13 July 2026.
Gold is reportedly a key resource for the ongoing conflict in Sudan, and the Council has expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in the country.
The bans will be incorporated into the Federal Council’s Ordinance on measures against Sudan, which has been active since 2005 and has included the EU’s additional measures since 2023.
It also includes an arms embargo, and targeted financial and travel sanctions against 36 individuals, entities and companies.
Switzerland already has strict due diligence requirements on import of gold and other precious metals, which are intended to prevent trade in conflict resources.
