Heathrow increases its sustainable aviation fuel incentive

The UK airport is targeting 2% above the government mandate by aiming for 5.6% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use in 2026.

SAF can cut lifecycle carbon emissions by 70% on average, say the UK Government, which has made £80mln available to airlines for support this year.

Heathrow says 5.6% of aviation fuel used at its airport fuel equates to ~350,000t, and could reduce carbon emissions by ~600,000t - equating to more than 950,000 economy class passenger round trips from Heathrow to JFK.

The airport aims to increase the use of SAF to make up 11% of fuel usage by 2030, with the government mandating 10% across the UK for the same deadline.

Matt Gorman, Heathrow’s Director of Sustainability, says, 'Sustainable Aviation Fuel is not a hypothetical concept for the future, it’s already producing real impact in 2026. Heathrow is leading the way globally, with 17% of the world’s SAF supply in 2024 used at the airport.'
