The mine will be operated by West Cumbria Mining and is expected to extract 2.4 Mt annually for use in industry.

The £165M Woodhouse coal mine development is for a large underground metallurgical coal mine. The output is intended for steel production.

The Cumbria County Council Development Control and Regulation Committee recommendation is still subject to the Secretary of State’s approval.
