Update: CWMS heat of IOM3's Young Persons' Lecture Competition

Add to cal

Room EC1-29, Frank Whittle Building, Coventry University, 3 Gulson Road, Coventry, CV1 2JH

This is to confirm that the CWMS heat of IOM3's YPLC will take place on Thursday 29th February as planned. We have only one entry (abstract below). If you wish to attend, please advise by email to iom3cwms@gmail.com by 11:00 on the 29th - and please advise any dietary allergies or restrictions: vegetarian or vegan diets. The heat will include a presentation from Ben Mason entitled "Democratised Manufacturing - The Power of Additive". Abstract: Additive Manufacturing, or more commonly called 3D Printing, is often heralded as a revolutionary technology that will disrupt supply chains world-over. It is prophesised that factories and distribution networks will be superseded by consumers having ready access to such devices. While it is true that 3D printing is revolutionary, there is no sign that it will signal the end of factories as we know them. However, I suggest that this ignores one of the greatest benefits of 3D printing. Not since the ink-jet printer, has a manufacturing technology been so democratised. Whole new business models have emerged for the supply of make-to-order AM parts to consumers, along with supply of low-cost machines for use at home and in small enterprises. One such machine manufacturer, Prusa, has delivered over 100,000 machines to hobbyists globally. This distributed, democratised capability has ushered in a new age of creative design and problem solving.

A reminder that competitors are required to give a lecture of 12-15 minutes on a topic related to materials, minerals, mining, packaging, clay technology or wood science and engineering. Prizes: There will be a prize of £100 for the winner on the night and a prize of £50 for each entrant selected. The winner will take part in the regional final currently planned to take place on March 14th for which there will be a cash prize of £150. The regional winner will take part in the UK final on Wednesday 15 May at The Armourers Hall in London. First prize is £750. Venue Information: The heat will take place in Room EC1-29 on the first floor of Coventry University's Frank Whittle Building, 3 Gulson Road, Coventry, CV1 2JH The agenda for the evening will be: 18:00 Networking and refreshments 18:30 Lectures begin
