Reminder: Industry Scale Refractory High Entropy Alloys for Extreme Conditions

Add to cal

Room EC1-12, Frank Whittle Building, Coventry University, 3 Gulson Road, Coventry, CV1 2JH

CWMS is pleased to announce our March lecture by Dr Masoumeh Faraji of Coventry University.
To enhance efficiencies in applications such as jet-engines and gas turbines, alloys of superior properties at high temperatures are essential. High entropy alloys (HEA) containing refractory elements (Nb, Ta, and Mo) are examples of these novel materials. Having elements with very high (Nb, Ta, Mo), high (Zr, Ti) and low (Al) melting temperatures, the refractory HEA (RHEA) alloys, cannot be manufactured by conventional techniques. Characteristics, properties, and behaviour of the above-mentioned RHEA during processing, i.e., to produce net or near-net-shape components are largely unknown.
Currently Dr Faraji is collaborating with Metalysis Ltd and leading a PhD research project where material and processing characteristics and of a similar RHEA alloy produced as powders are investigated. This presentation will introduce refractory high entropy alloys, highlighting the opportunities they can present to enhance efficiencies and reduce CO2 emissions for applications of extreme conditions. It will, using examples, discuss near-net manufacturing processes when dealing with such alloys which contain elements of significantly different melting temperatures and different densities.
The lecture will be delivered as a hybrid event, being presented at room EC1-12 on the first floor of the Frank Whittle Engineering & Computing Building of Coventry University at 3 Gulson Rd, Coventry CV1 2JH. (goo.gl/maps/wuGvRgmTCWRsKBoZ7). Car parking is available at several city centre car parks. The event will begin at 17:45 with refreshments and an opportunity to network and the lecture will start at 18:15.
