Associate Professor in Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Cardiff University

Dr. Riccardo Maddalena is an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at Cardiff University’s School of Engineering and the Director of DURALAB, a cutting-edge facility for accelerated ageing testing. He also serves as Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti Racism. His research focuses on reducing the carbon footprint of the concrete industry through the reuse of mineral waste and industrial by-products. With expertise in cement and concrete science across nano to bulk scales, he conducts international research involving supplementary cementitious materials and life cycle assessments.

Dr Ceren Ince

Assistant Professor, Institute of Built Environment (ISBE), School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS), Heriot-Watt University

Ceren Ince has over two decades of research experience in construction materials, cementitious systems and material characterisation. Her research has progressively evolved towards the valorisation of industrial and mining residues, with a focus on understanding how material characteristics govern their potential for use in low-carbon construction. Her current research develops mineralogy-informed approaches for the classification, activation and reactivity assessment of mine tailings, supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the EPSRC Photonics and Quantum Accelerator. Her work combines fundamental materials science with a strong focus on translating complex waste streams into viable resources for the construction sector.
