The new CIRIA guidance report on The Use and Carbon Benefits of Geosystems in Civil Engineering is scheduled for publication this autumn, following two years of industry-wide consultation and collaboration.

Niall Corney, the report's lead author, will present a summary of the report and its content, highlighting the 15 case studies used to demonstrate the low-carbon and cost-effective benefits of geosystems. The presentation will also explore the contribution of geosystems to biodiversity net gain and the resilience of infrastructure assets in the face of rapid climate change.

The roles and responsibilities of stakeholders across the civil engineering sector will be examined, together with a range of practical tools, opportunities, and challenges that the industry must address to ensure the continued growth of geosystems within UK infrastructure.

• Niall has over three decades of global experience in geotechnical engineering and civil infrastructure having worked for consultants, contractors and product manufacturers on major projects across the UK, Asia, North America, Europe and Turkey.
• His project design experience crosses a number of sectors including airports, high-speed rail, highways, ports, flood protection, and water infrastructure.
• He has a deep understanding of the civil engineering industry and in particular a strong background in geosynthetics and the provision of specialist design services within the ground engineering sector.
• He is lead author of the CIRIA Geosystems Guidance which is due to be published in the Autumn of 2026.
