Project launches to make better use of timber in construction
The initiative Using Wood Well is developing practical ways to measure how efficiently timber is used in buildings.
The research project involves organisations such as Change Building, Waugh Thistleton Architects and the University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Computational Design and Construction, with funding from Built by Nature.
They will focus on when and where timber should be used, how much is appropriate and how long it should remain in use. The team is developing metrics covering wood use intensity (which measures the amount of timber used in a building), the proportion of bio-based material, and the relationship between a material’s service life and the time needed for the resource to renew.
The aim is to give designers a clearer way to compare options at an early stage and avoid using more timber than a project needs, while keeping carbon storage, resource efficiency and forest renewal in mind.
