Open letter challenges delayed circular economy plan
Over 50 businesses and trade associations urge publication of the UK Government's Circular Economy Growth Plan.
They are worried the ongoing delay will ‘harm momentum towards a more resilient, resource-efficient economy’.
The Growth Plan was originally expected in October 2025 – over six months ago – with a further promise that it would be published in early 2026 after the cabinet reshuffle in September 2025.
It is meant to outline a clear direction from the government on accelerating changes proven to cut costs, improve competitiveness and enhance industrial performance.
Organisations including IKEA, Virgin Media O2, SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, Arup, REA (Renewable Energy Association), TechUK, UKFT and the Packaging Federation sent the letter to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) Secretary of State Emma Reynolds.
IOM3 is one of the signatories.
The letter outlines how the Growth Plan is needed to end uncertainty and give them ‘the confidence to invest further, scale up what is already working and accelerate a circular economy transition across our operations’.
Done right, they expect the circular economy to be a source of new jobs and to help address public dissatisfaction around waste.
England is believed to be falling behind other countries, including the devolved nations of the UK, which have already set out plans to boost their economies by prioritising circularity.
