IOM3 holds first ever Mining Masterclass
The success of the inaugural Mining Masterclass marks an exciting milestone for the IOM3 Education & Outreach team.
Secondary school teachers from across the UK travelled to Cornwall for a free, two-day, residential CPD course designed to increase their understanding of mining. Mining is a relevant but often misunderstood sector. Our aim was giving teachers a full picture of mining that challenged their perceptions and would allow them to pass their understanding of mining on to the young people they teach.
The course was hosted by Cornish Lithium which gave the teachers a chance to explore the company’s lithium mining operations and learn all about the work being carried out to support the UK’s future supply of critical minerals. The two days were packed with presentations, practical activities and a site tour.
One of the highlights of the course was the hands-on activities. The teachers handled real ore samples and explored the UK’s critical minerals and how they can incorporate this important topic in their classrooms. We also heard from various professionals in the mining sector during a careers session. It was important for us to highlight the diverse range of opportunities in the mining industry.
We were delighted that IOM3 President Christine Blackmore was able to join us over the two days. We also heard from the Camborne School of Mines who explained the wide range of educational pathways into the mining industry.
The feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive with teachers leaving the course with increased confidence, practical classroom resources and a better understanding of the importance of mining plays in supporting modern technologies and the transition to a more sustainable future.
