Call for Input: Work-based immigration

Respond to the call for input by 13 October.

The Home Affairs Committee has launched an inquiry to examine work migration in the UK. The inquiry will scrutinise the government’s approach to the Skilled Worker visa, explore the link between immigration policy and skills policy, and consider the role of migration in addressing labour shortages.

IOM3 is seeking insights from our members on the relevance of these issues to the materials, minerals and mining sectors. We welcome contributions from across sectors, including insights from industry, academia and the wider professional community.

Some key questions posed by the Home Affairs Committee include:

  • What impact could sector level workforce strategies have on international recruitment?
  • How, if at all, should the approach the government takes to linking immigration and skills policy vary depending on the level of training required for different jobs?
  • To what extent should addressing labour shortages be prioritised in immigration policy?
  • What evidence is available on the effectiveness of shortage lists as a mechanism for using the immigration system to respond to labour shortages?
  • What impact does immigration policy have on investment in domestic skills and training by employers?

We welcome insights from our members on any or all of these questions. Please send evidence and comments to the IOM3 policy team at [email protected] by 13 October 2026.
