Bricks to be made using only hydrogen energy
The HyBrick project will use green hydrogen to make clay bricks.
Brickmaker Michelmersh, UK, will lead a consortium to make a 100% hydrogen fired brick.
Their winning bid from the Industrial Fuel Switching competition - run by the UK Goverment's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy - allows the company to conduct a feasibility study into replacing natural gas with hydrogen for brick making.
Phase one will demonstrate the viability of fuel switching with hydrogen used in clay brick production at Michelmersh's Freshfield Lane site using green electrolytic hydrogen.
This project is a part of the £1bln Net Zero Innovation Portfolio to fund low-carbon technologies.
