As tribology is a multidisciplinary field with wide-reaching applications and many UK-based science and engineering based professional bodies have tribology or surface-focused groups.
In 2015, several of these organisations came together in a unique collaboration:
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)
Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
Institute of Physics (IOP)
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Together, they formed UK Tribology. A network managed by a committee with representatives from each organisation, chaired by Robert Wood and supported by a secretariat hosted by IOM3.
UK Tribology aims to promote education, collaboration and engagement with tribology across universities and industry. Raising awareness of this essential field supports better tribological practices, helping reduce energy use and economic losses.
By working together, experts from diverse fields can drive innovation, improve system performance and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable, decarbonised, net-zero-compliant future.
