Towards a theory of interdisciplinary integration
Dr Mattia L Gallotti | Philosopher & Editor-in-Chief of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews

Interdisciplinarity is the integration of bodies of knowledge to create works of synthesis. In the words of Anthony Michaelis, founding editor of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, the process of integrating knowledge is akin to the ‘fusion of effort’ that characterises a chemical compound, the result being irreducibly different from the sum of the parts. This Fellows’ Lecture is structured around three core points. One is about the current state of art in the field of Interdisciplinary Studies; the others articulate two foundational questions that need addressing to make progress within the field, working towards a mature methodology of interdisciplinary integration.

Interdisciplinary teams: Nice to have, or a pre-requisite for growth?
Dr Bernie Rickinson CEng FIMMM

Recognising the continuing and developing strength of Materials Development in the UK, it continues to be frustrating that there remains an attitude of 'Technology Push' rather than 'Pull' from the applicational market place. Are we simply talking to ourselves? This position is not new, or for that matter solely restricted to the UK. To encourage Technology Pull, the Materials community needs to engage with a much more diverse user community. Interdisciplinary working is fun but not easy, however without such efforts new materials and processes will continue to collect more dust on the shelves.
