The Wood Technology Society
19 Dec 2017

As part of a wider scheme to help educate specifiers and users of timber, the WTS recently helped in organising a special Wood in Construction event for the Institution of Structural Engineers Northern Counties Regional Group and the Institution of Civil Engineers Teesside Branch. The evening event was held at Teesside University on 17th October.

Dr Robert Hairstans from the Centre for Offsite Construction + Innovative Structures at Edinburgh Napier University gave a fascinating talk on the recent developments in environmentally sound, offsite manufacture and modern methods of   construction (MMC). Subjects touched upon included grading techniques and ways of optimising selection, timber connections for specification in offsite systems and new timber products and systems including solid laminate timber systems dowel-lam, nail-lam and cross-laminated timber.

The event was well received, and there was a good dialogue after the talk, with a comprehensive Q& A session.
