The Institute has embarked on a major digital transformation project – named Project Optimus - that will deliver a new database and member portal early in 2020, followed by the integration of our other administration and communications systems and a brand new website by early 2021.
Since around the 1990s, the IOM3 information services team has been working hard on gathering research into women who made their mark in materials and minerals and who were part of the Institute’s long-standing history dating back 150 years. IOM3 is pleased to have now feature eight inspiring females on the Heritage Stairway based at the IOM3 London office.
Back in September, academics and industrialists met for the 10th International Charles Parsons Turbine Conference held by IOM3, sharing the latest updates in turbine research and development. Charles Parsons’ concepts and designs have been instrumental in developing turbo-machinery for the mass generation of electricity and propulsion – a legacy honoured through the series of Parsons Conferences.
IOM3 is pleased to have appointed Margaret Copland, CEng, CSci, FIMMM Senior Wells & Technology Manager at the Oil and Gas Authority and a board member of the Oil and Gas Division as the Vice Chair of the IOM3 Technology Communities Board.
The UK government has recently set out two ambitious and long-term strategic objectives, namely the 25-year environmental action plan and a commitment for the UK to be zero net carbon by 2050. This conference critically examines these two challenges, with an emphasis on rigorous systems thinking and numerical estimates.
On 12 November, IOM3 held its first Technology Communities Board Annual Forum in London. The aim of the forum was to introduce technical communities and divisional chairs to the Strategic Advisors and for the various IOM3 divisions to share best practices, challenges and to help shape the Institute’s events calendar going forward.
Following the success of the IOM3 Advisory Council elections and having confirmed 15 vacancies representing IOM3 Grades and Regions, the first meeting took place on 5 November to celebrate and officially welcome the new governance structure.
