Meet The Starpack Judges: John Lamb
John Lamb will be on the Starpack 2017 Industry Innovation Awards judging pannel. IOM3 spoke to John to discuss his career in design and what he expects from entrants this year.
Briefly summarise your career to date and current role
I have worked for over 30 years as a creative designer specialising in structural packaging for brands and products around the world. After qualifying from Northumbria University with a Design for Industry degree, I joined Packaging Innovation (now PI3) and then Addison Design.
I co-founded Tin Horse, a packaging design and innovation consultancy in 1990, which I ran as a director and shareholder for 25 years. I worked globally with clients such as Proctor and Gamble, Colgate Palmolive, Unilever and Novartis to name but a few.
In 2016, I set up Look360 Design Ltd with the objective of delivering truly creative and innovative packaging design solutions.
What's the best thing about the newly relaunched Starpack Packaging Industry Innovation Awards?
Creating a clearer differentiation to other packaging competitions by promoting and seeking out true innovation in clearly defined categories. Also rewarding the work done by individuals, as well as the companies they may work for.
What are you, as a judge, keen to find in the entries?
Clever use of packaging formats, materials and systems to clearly deliver a benefit, either to the end user or the client company. I want to be inspired and find myself saying ‘wow’.
What is the most important thing to consider as an entrant?
Is it innovative? Does it address a need? Are you describing this in a succinct way?
