Materials for Fusion Reactors.

Professor Brad Wynne,  Culham Professor of Materials Technology, University of Sheffield will present Materials for Fusion Reactors.  

 

The realisation of achieving electricity on the grid from a viable fusion power plant is  one of  the greatest engineering challenges.

 

Materials must be capable of withstanding the ultra-extreme environment within the reactor core. The extreme high temperatures and neutron induced radiation damage levels are far greater than those in a fission reactor. Components have complex shapes and must have a 5-year life cycle

 

Brad will review some of the key fusion materials and manufacturing challenges and explore  possible solutions. He will emphasise the opportunities for the UK manufacturing sector to take advantage of the current expanding research base in this area.
