Near Net Shape - Materials fit for the 21st Century

4 Feb 2020
Sheffield

The SMEA President, Andrew Kirton-Vaughan, Divisional Director at H.I Quality Steel Castings Limited, will give his Presidential Lecture on: Near Net Shape Materials fit for the 21s Century.

Today's design and manufacturing processes are highly focused on reducing production time, waste and enhancing the design of engineering components. Castings have long been used to create shaped components, often where a high volume is required or fabrication is impossible.

Today, new technology such as Additive manufacture is being widely touted as a solution to making complex shaped components and minimising machining and waste. Castings still offer many of these attributes but at a fraction of the cost but seem to have become overlooked except in high volume application such as automotive. Traditional casting technology can be combined with modern manufacturing techniques and produce highly innovative products offering value to end users
