ESTA Poster competition winners announced
To celebrate Earth Science Week 2018 (13-21 October), the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain and the Earth Science Teachers Association ran a national competition for UK schools entitled “Economic Minerals Matter”. This competition, based on the idea that Earth Science matters in our lives, focused on economic minerals – the metals, minerals, rocks and hydrocarbons extracted from the Earth by mining, quarrying and pumping.
The challenge was for students to select an economic mineral that is essential to their life, show their knowledge and understanding of this topic and to produce an A3 poster that was both eye-catching and informative and which would appeal to and be understood by students of their own age.
Entries were received in all four age groups and the posters were judged on originality, impact and the level and quality of information provided in the poster. Congratulations go to the following winners:
- Andrew Speed from Mundella Primary School – Key Stage 2 winner
- Alex Jackson from Sheffield High School – Key Stage 2 winner
- Poppy Down from Sheffield High School – GCSE winner
- Sabina Smurthwaite from Cornwall College – A-level winner
