IOM3 members recognised in Queen’s New Year Honours

The New Year Honours List for 2022 recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.

Congratulations to the following members:

  • Dr Liane Smith CBE FREng CEng FIMMM, Founder and Director of Larkton Ltd, awarded for service to engineering and materials science
  • Dr Faye Smith OBE CEng FIMMM Materials Specialist, Department for International Trade and Independent Consultant, awarded for public service.
  • Professor Alan Cottenden MBE CEng CSci MIMMM, Emeritus Prof of Incontinence Technology, UCL, for sufferers of incontinence.

Liane said, ‘It is with enormous pride that I received a CBE. It's the culmination of a 40+ year career in this discipline. In accepting this award, I wish to acknowledge and thank the many collaborators I have worked with over the years whose work made my contributions to this field possible. I believe we have made a transformational impact in how our sector evaluates materials performance and engineering design. Good materials engineers produce economically efficient designs which provide the fundamental infrastructure to benefit the whole of society while protecting the environment and human health. I take great pride that our profession is recognised in this award.’

Faye recently was awarded the 2021 IOM3 Leslie Holliday Prize. Faye said, 'To be awarded an OBE for public service in relation to the materials industry, UK supply chains and international trade was complete surprise but an absolute honour. As a passionate supporter and promoter of the UK materials sector I hope this will add extra weight and credibility to any promotion done or battles fought on behalf of the UK materials sector.'

Alan Cottenden MBE CEng CSci MIMMM adds, 'It's gratifying that the award recognises the needs of people living with such a taboo condition as incontinence which, though it rarely takes lives, seriously diminishes the quality of life of millions. Working in multidisciplinary teams, including people with incontinence, to improve containment technology continues to challenge and fascinate me.'
