Interview: Mark Jolly CEng CEnv FIMMM, Chair of the IOM3 Materials Processing & Manufacturing Group speaks to IOM3
IOM3 is a cosponsor of the 17th International Conference on Modelling of Casting, Welding & Advanced Solidification Processes.
Mark Jolly CEng CEnv FIMMM is part of the organising committee of the Conference and is also Chair of the IOM3 Materials Processing & Manufacturing Group - one of the 22 Technical Communities of the Institute. In this interview with IOM3, he talks about the importance of industry and academia engaging with each other, and what attendees can expect from the programme of the 17th International Conference on Modelling of Casting, Welding & Advanced Solidification Processes.
Q: What can speakers and attendees at the 17th International Conference on Modelling of Casting, Welding, and Advanced Solidification Processes (MCWASP) expect from the programme?
A: World leaders in the numerical modelling of casting, welding and solidification will present their latest research. The conference is international with speakers from Europe, Asia and America, and across academia and industry. There will be opportunities to network with experts in the field with all participants staying at the same venue with coffee breaks, meals, drinks receptions and social trips allowing time for further discussion.
Q: Is there a key theme that you’d like to highlight, and why is it important?
A: For the first time, the conference will include a session on industrial perspectives, highlighting the needs of industry from academia. This is on the first day of the conference to encourage discussion between our industrial and academic attendees on solving the key problems in the field. This conference is hosting an honorary symposium for Prof. Christoph Beckermann, who sadly passed away last year. He was a regular attendee and a world leader in many of the focus topics. This session will reflect on his contributions and also highlight future directions.
Q: Machine learning and artificial intelligence are part of every conversation right now; how does this figure in the numerical modelling of solidification phenomena?
A: Current machine learning is interacting in many ways with numerical modelling in solidification. One of these is in the processing of in situ experimental results enabling far greater validation of models. Another aspect is physics-informed neural networks and similar techniques, that are increasingly being implemented to improve the speed of simulations.
Q: What information resources and community support can attendees expect from IOM3 as a co-sponsor?
A: We are delighted that IOM3 is co-sponsoring MCWASP. The conference is attracting attendees from all over the world, many whom may not be familiar with IOM3 and so this would be an opportunity for the IOM3 to promote itself. We are expecting a large UK participation, who may find this an opportunity to engage more closely with the IOM3.
Q: Do you have any final thoughts for the prospective conference attendees?
A: The conference is single-session and so all attendees will be able to watch all of the presentations and gain insight across all topics. We are also therefore expecting a large number of poster presentations and have linked these sessions to social events allowing plenty of time for fruitful discussions. The conference venue is set across 54 acres, giving attendees the opportunity to go for walks and enjoy the UK’s beautiful countryside.
