Dr Sam Cruchley CEng FIMMM

Sam is currently working as an Associate Professor and Head of Education in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham. In this role he has a significant teaching and leadership role within the School and conducts research in both materials science and pedagogy. His current research interests include mechanical property, oxidation and corrosion interactions in high performance metallic alloys and optimisation of advanced manufacturing techniques, as well as innovative methods of teaching, including the use of technology and different types of assessment and feedback.
Prior to his current role, he started his career by completing a PhD in high temperature oxidation of Ni-based superalloys and the role of oxidation in fatigue crack initiation at the University of Birmingham in 2015. Following this, he went to work in industry for a number of years spending some time working for the National Nuclear Laboratory as a metallurgist within the waste management and decommissioning team and then worked for Rolls-Royce plc. as a Materials Scientist within the Materials, Corrosion and Chemistry team, before returning to the University of Birmingham.
Throughout his career he has always had a significant involvement with the IOM3, starting as being a member and then Chair of the Younger Members’ Committee (now Student and Early Career Committee) and is now a member of the Accreditation and Professional Formation committee. This involves carrying out accreditation visits for University and professional development programmes.
