Highlighting some of the latest and emerging technologies in industrial digitalisation and their application to the steel industry with a particular focus on the application of digital technologies to existing process plant and equipment.
Chris is the Chief Executive Officer the Materials Processing Institute, which he has led since its divestment in 2014. The Institute develops new technologies, primarily for the steel and metals industries, in the areas of decarbonisation, circular economy, advanced materials and digital technologies. Chris’s background is in the steel sector, where he has worked internationally. He is a well known advocate for industry and technology, often appearing in the media speaking on topics such as the hydrogen economy, industrial digitalisation and materials supply chains.
The role of the electric arc furnace in global steelmaking has had an inexorable rise in use and influence since its first use just over 100 years ago. Connection powers are nearly 1,000 times higher today and production has increased from just 10 t/24 hr to over 6,000 t/24 hr. However, this role is set to become even more significant as environmental, regional trade issues and raw material availability all become even more critical. This presentation will look at the critical aspects now and in the future.
Mike has over 25 years’ experience in the steel and special metals industry. He was most recently Director at Hatch Beddows for 15 years where he worked globally in the steel and special metals sector focused on techno-economic strategy, technology selection, due diligence and market assignments throughout the value chain and in all sectors. Previous to Hatch he worked seven years with British Steel and UK Steel in a range of technical and commercial positions. He has a DPhil in Physics from Oxford University and a diploma in Corporate Finance from London Business School. He is currently an independent consultant and project developer in the steel and special metals sectors.Sponsors
