An announcement from the Welsh Government on 18 March covers a consultation on the phase-out of plastics such as straws and cutlery, classed as ‘single-use, hard-to-recycle and commonly littered’.

Packaging will also be considered with non-recyclable food and drink containers made from expanded polystyrene listed. While consultations are yet to take place, bans may be in place from 2021, lining up with the UK Government ban on plastic items such as cotton buds.

Meanwhile the Scottish Government has postponed the introduction of a national Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) until 2022 – roughly five years after a first announcement.
