On 25 February, IOM3 celebrated 150 years since the formation of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1869.

The Inauguration Day celebrations started with presentations highlighting innovations in the past, present and future. Sir Colin Humphreys, Dr Sue Mossman and Dr Kate Thornton, Vice President of IOM3 presented talks looking back on the history of Bessemer, the current trends and state of materials and looking ahead at some of the challenges for the materials entrepreneur of the future.

The presentations were followed with an interactive workshop, the sealing of a time capsule with all ideas and input from the workshop, and the inauguration of the first IOM3 female President, Professor Serena Best.

As part of the celebrations, IOM3 has also launched a colourful window display on Warren Street, London, made up of 150 balloons, each representing a year in the rich history of our professional scientific and engineering institution. An artwork depicting the roots of the Institute and all 34 of its predecessor institutions was unveiled during the day.

That is not all when it comes to celebrations, to coincide with our 150th anniversary celebrations, IOM3 has also launched its digital library portal, allowing free access to some historic content from our archive.
